Behind the lens: Landon Coats

Welcome to the first installation of our new monthly blog “behind the lens”. The aim of this series is to talk to fellow super 8 lovers and interview them about their lives, their experiences and their projects. It’ll be a short, 10 question (roughly) interview each month with some amazing directors and filmmakers. We hope you enjoy this series and enjoy the first interview with Landon Coats:

Just to start off, could you please tell us who you are and what you do?
My name is Landon Coats, and I am a screenwriter and director. I love filmmaking and telling stories so I am always looking for the opportunity to express those passions.

So I’ve seen on your Instagram profile that you’ve shot a fair bit of super 8, what’s your favorite super 8 camera? And what would you like to shoot with in the future?
I own the Nizo 801 Macro and I really like it, it has a lot of great features and an amazing lens on it. I would like to get my hands on the rumored Kodak super 8 camera, but I doubt that will ever happen… Until then if I get another camera I would get the Classic Pro camera, but that probably won’t be for a while.

On your blog you talk about your first experience with Super 8, what drew you to it in the first place?
I had been shooting projects on the RED and other digital cameras, and liked the footage, but wanted to try something new to further my experience. So I did research and really fell in love with the look if super 8. Since getting the camera I’ve gotten more and more interested in the process and history.

Random question…. On a scale of one to 10, how weird would you say you are?
Maybe like a 7…? Haha, I’m not totally sure, I think you have to be kinda weird to be an artist, but I’m not sure if people consider me weird or just eccentric.

What do you like doing when you aren’t writing or directing?
I like bowling, writing, checking out breweries, studying film, and cooking.

Do you have any cameras other than the 801?
I do a lot of shooting on my iPhone, I think its an easy and pretty solid camera to use from day today. For bigger projects I use either a RED Helium or an Arri Alexa Classis, I don’t own these ( I wish) but I have folks in my network that do.

So what projects have you currently got going on?
I’m about to release a new horror short film called “Motel 32” and I am super excited for it. I am also working to produce a coming of age film called “Summer With Scarlett” here is the Instagram link, also here is the link to my personal Instagram where you can find out more about the projects I’m working on.

Summer with Scarlett is based around the 90’s grunge scene and I’ve seen you wear a couple 90’s bands t-shirts what’s your favorite band from the 90’s?
Pearl Jam, all day!

Finally, what advice would you give to anyone that wants to get into film-making?
Start small and really study the language of cinema, make a few shorts with your friends and be willing to embrace constructive criticism. With the phone today having pretty amazing cameras in them there is no excuse not to at least try!
